picture this:
a large group of people are gathered at a public square
one guy is in the middle of it all
standing on top of a fountain, speaking loudly
he has everyone's attention
there are some people off on their own…
some couples sitting on benches, talking in doorways…
but the most powerful presence of all is fountain guy
what's he talking about anyway?
probably politics
even if it was something else, it just feels political
to wield that much attention all at once
he must be a leader
or trying to be one anyway
all those people around him were his followers
what is a leader, anyhow?
a head of state?
a business executive?
a celebrity?
are judges leaders?
leaders are always loved/hated with such passion!
it's enough to make a person jealous
is it just me or do we not really have leaders anymore?
or followers for that matter?
like, yes, we have presidents and CEOs…
but they don't really feel like leaders
and, yes, they can claim to have millions of followers
but how invested in a leader is a follower these days?
it's like leadership has been cheapened in some way
it feels like we're all kinda skeptical of leaders these days
maybe this is just something every generation feels
or maybe it has to do with technology
technology is all about creating leaders and followers
not like science
science questions leadership, thinks for itself
science is more of an action-taking
technology is just the result of that action-taking
science never ends
technology is ephemeral, now more than ever
as soon as some new technology is introduced
it gets replaced and made obsolete
it's happening so fast now that you can kinda feel it
maybe that's why leading and following seem so…
meaningless (these days, at least)
because as the technology changes, so do the leaders
and when change is a constant, what presence is powerful enough to break through the noise?
still
i get jealous of the leaders
don't you?
